Rooting Android Phones - Advantages & Disadvantages

To Root or Not to Root an Android Phone - That is the Question

If you've done any internet searching on the topic of Android phones, you've most likely run across either forums or articles discussing "rooting" your device. This article is not intended to show you how to root your phone or to convince you whether or not to root it. This is an impartial summary of the advantages and disadvantages of rooting an Android phone.

Scroll Down for Video

Your Android smartphone can do a lot, but you can add even more functionality if you root your smartphone. Benefits include installing and uninstalling any apps you want, controlling the deepest sub-settings in your phone, and enabling features restricted by your carrier, such as tethering. Before you dive into the world of rooting, you need to know what the risks are, and the best way to root your phone safely without losing any data.

The information in this article should apply no matter who is the manufacturer of your Android phone: Samsung, Google, Huawei, Xiaomi, LG,etc.

What Is Rooting?

To Root or Not to Root an Android Phone

The Android phone that you love and enjoy is running an operating system that was designed for commercial and private use. Like most any operating system, several features have been disabled, either for future use or to prevent a casual user from causing permanent damage to the operating system. Rooting, also known as jailbreaking, is the process in which limitations are removed and full access to the operating system is allowed. Once rooted, the Android phone owner has more control over many of the settings, features, and performance of the phone. Basically, rooting means to get to the root of the operating system and to have the ability to make global changes.

To add more, Rooting is the process that lets you access all the settings and sub-settings in your phone. It's similar to having administrative access to your PC or Mac, where you can install software, remove unwanted programs, and tinker to your heart's delight. On your phone, this means you can remove preloaded apps from your phone's carrier or its manufacturers, such as backup apps, sponsored apps and the like. Then you can make room for apps you'll use, and possibly speed up your phone and save battery life while you're at it. And if you decide rooting isn't for you, it's relatively easy to unroot it.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Rooting

Well, there are both advantages and disadvantages of rooting. The end result depends upon WHY YOU ARE ROOTING YOUR PHONE. So, let's begin with the Disadvantages of Rooting

Disadvantages of Rooting Your Phone

There are two primary disadvantages to rooting an Android phone:

Rooting immediately voids your phone's warranty

After they are rooted, most phones cannot be serviced under warranty.

Rooting involves the risk of "bricking" your phone

A bricked phone is no better than carrying around a brick in your pocket. The phone is dead and unusable that is, it no longer boots up. Combine that with the first disadvantage, and you have a now-useless phone that cannot be repaired under warranty. Well, this is unlikely to happen if you follow rooting instructions closely, but still something to consider.

Other potential disadvantages, though less severe, are worthy of consideration:

Poor performance

Although the intention of rooting a phone is to improve the phone's performance, some users have found that, in their attempts to speed up the phone or add additional features, the phones lost both performance speed and features.

Viruses

Even phones can get viruses. A common practice that people do with rooted phones is to flash their ROMs with custom programs. Whenever you make changes to the software code, you run the risk of introducing a virus.

Other Risks involved with Rooting

Rooting your phone may also block access to some apps. Developers may block rooted phones from downloading their apps for security and copyright reasons or typically for security or DRM (digital rights management) concerns

Advantages of Rooting an Android Phone

Rooting your Android phone offers benefits that including:

Running special apps

Rooting allows the phone to run apps that it cannot run otherwise. There are many apps designed just for rooted phones that help you improve performance, block spam, hide ads and backup everything on your phone. You can also download batch app removers so you can get rid of all your bloatware in one fell swoop. And many of these apps can even be found in the Google Play Store.

Want to use your smartphone as a Wi-Fi hotspot? Some carriers, like Verizon, block this function unless you sign up for a particular plan. Rooting your phone can unlock this features at no extra cost.
You can also download an in-depth backup, ad-blocking, and security apps.

Removing pre-installed apps

Removing pre-installed apps from the phone. Unless you have a Google Pixel or Google Nexus smartphone, it's likely there are apps on your phone that you never installed. These unwanted apps are often referred to as bloatware since it takes up space and can slow down the performance of your phone. Examples of bloatware include apps from companies that have an agreement with your wireless carrier, such as the NFL, or carrier-branded apps for music, backup, and other functions.

Unlike apps you've chosen to download, these apps cannot be uninstalled—unless you have a rooted smartphone.

Freeing up memory

When you install an app on your phone, it is stored in the phone's memory. Rooting allows you to move installed applications to your SD card, thus freeing up system memory for additional files or apps.

Custom ROMs

This is the most powerful feature of rooted phones. There are hundreds of custom ROMs that can do anything from speeding up the processing speed of your phone to changing the entire look and feel of the phone.

You can replace the Android OS that came pre-installed and replaces it with another one

Once you root your smartphone, you can access custom ROMs, such as Paranoid Android and LineageOS. A custom ROM will have an attractive and clean interface as well as a myriad of customization options including color schemes, screen layouts, and more.

To Root or Not to Root?

The decision to root your Android phone is one that should not be rushed into. Though the allure of having an unlocked phone is powerful, having a bricked phone is no fun at all.

Still, you are determined to root your android smartphone, always have a backup plan. Also, If you do choose to root, you can always reverse it if you have any regrets. And, as a gift for your rooted devices, here is a list of The best 24 Apps for Rooted Android Devices.

How to Recover Deleted Texts From A Phone?

We’ve all deleted something important and then needed it, or damaged our phone and lost crucial data. Unfortunately, sometimes this happens to our text messages, and if you’ve got an Android, it may be very difficult to get them back. Here's what you can attempt to salvage them, and more importantly, what you can do to keep it from happening again.

Recover Deleted Texts From A Phone (Android)

When you delete something, Android marks it to be "overwritten" with new data. Think of it like erasing something from your to-do list with a pencil being able to write something new in the same space.

Important Things to Do

First, you need to try and preserve the data. If you’ve just deleted the messages, put your phone into airplane mode immediately. This will shut off the Wi-Fi and the cellular radio so you won’t download any new information. You also shouldn’t use the camera, record audio, or otherwise create any new data that might potentially overwrite the messages.

Once that’s done, you should check to see if the relevant data you need has already been kept elsewhere. For example, photos are sometimes automatically backed up to your phone’s Gallery app, and appointments are sometimes automatically added to your calendar. If there’s a relevant app for the information you need, check that first.

If you’re in regular contact with the person whose messages you lost, they may have the conversation backed up on their phone and can forward it to you. Just explain the situation and ask them to forward the relevant messages to you.

If all else fails, and you've backed up your phone completely before you deleted the messages using a full-phone SMS backup app such as SMS Backup & Restore or  Ultimate Backup, or other such apps in Google Play you can try wiping and restoring your phone.

Keep it in mind if you have already installed Apps like SMS Backup & Restore then it becomes really easy to recover deleted text from a phon.

Here comes the main part, if the above steps don’t work, then there’s no easy way to restore the messages with software.

(With Software) Recover Deleted Texts From A Phone

If wiping and restoring the phone is out of the question, you can turn to PC-based software.
There are plenty of “Android data recovery” applications out there, from companies who aren’t affiliated with Google. While the quality of these applications varies widely depending on the company, there are a few consistent factors with these apps.

These softwares may be able to recover your text messages, among other deleted data, if the data hasn't already been overwritten. All these apps will do is find the data marked for deletion and you can decide to remove it or not.

In most of the cases, they require you to “root” your phone. Think of “root” as the person who has all the keys to a building and the permission to go anywhere and do anything in it. Rooting your phone will likely void the warranty on your phone and may cause other problems.

Lastly, you will have to pay for the software. So you have to weigh the value of retrieving your text messages against what you pay for the software, the risk of voiding your warranty, and the uncertain results.

If you do decide to go the software route, DiskDigger is a popular app that doesn’t require you to root your phone, although that may limit the software’s effect. But whether you go to software, or simply ask for a new text, this is one case where an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Backing Up Your Messages

If you have a relatively new Android phone, backing up your text messages is simple. First, check to see if your phone has Google Drive installed. If not, you can find it in the Google Play store; open the store and search for “Google Drive.” It’ll be a free download. You can choose to buy more storage if you want, but it won’t be necessary for our purposes.

Once Google Drive is downloaded, open it, sign in if you need to use the name and password you use for your Gmail if necessary, and click the three lines in the upper left-hand corner. Then choose settings, and select “Google Backup.”

Recover Deleted Texts From A Phone

This will open a menu, and then select “SMS messages.” If Google Drive came pre-installed on your phone, it’ll already be backing up your messages, but otherwise, simply enable it and that will preserve texts. However, you won't have long; Google Drive updates its backup every 12 to 24 hours, so if a message is deleted, restore it immediately.

Recover Deleted Texts From A Phone

Unfortunately, this is an archive: It isn't searchable for one message and you can't restore just one. This will update your entire text history, all at once, to the previous setting. If there are any important messages you've gotten in the meantime, use the techniques below to preserve them.

Backing Up MMS and Photos

For multi-media messages, or MMS, such as photos, you’ll need to repeat this process with Google Photos, although that usually comes with your Android. However, the good news is that any photos you take, if you have Google Photos, backups have been enabled for years so you might be surprised what’s already stored on there. For photos that are sent to you, you may need to download a third-party app such as Save MMS, which will do it automatically.

If you really want to cover your bases, you can also screenshot important messages, which will be saved automatically by Google Photos. On any Android phone operating system 4.0 or above (which is almost any phone released since 2011), hold the power button and the volume down button at the same time, and it’ll snap a photo of your screen. It’s a “quick and dirty” way to back up important messages when you’re rushed for time, or only need to back up a handful of messages.

If you want a full-featured tool that doesn't involve messing with your phone, try Helium, which uses your desktop computer and can preserve specific messages, as well as data from your whole Android. There are other such apps available in Google Play Store so do read the reviews and ratings prior going for any app.

This ounce of prevention will go a long way towards preserving your text history and keeping the messages you want properly recorded. And it’ll also ensure you hang onto everything you snap.

How to Pin URLs, Files, Photos, Texts, etc. to Your Home Screen?

There are some websites/blogs/posts that we visit most often. Well, now it has become really easy to access these in just one click with the help of a very simple mobile application 'Shorty'.

Scroll for Video

Shorty, as the name suggests, lets you create simple shortcuts on your Android device. The app essentially lets you pin URLs, files, photos, texts, etc. to your home screen, so that you can have them ready at all times. It’s really handy.

Shorty allows you to pin any file from your phone or URL link to the home application. Simply install Shorty and share some file or text from any application.

Depending on the file type you can also customize the appearance of the icon. There are three possible icon styles:
• text - write up to 10 characters,
• thumbnail - depends on the type of file,
• preview - currently supported only for images.

You can also pick icon background color and write custom label which will be displayed in your home app.

To use this app, simply share the desired item with the app. Then head over to the app to create a shortcut. Once done, you’ll see that the shortcut shows up on the home screen like an app icon, which you can then move around. Obviously, the app is not for everyone but surely gets the job done.

  • It’s a handy tool if you’re sending information you’re afraid of leaking out or personal details that recipients should only need access to for a limited amount of time.
  • If you send an email in confidential mode, any attachments that go along with it will be restricted as well. That means that recipient won’t be able to download any sensitive photos or documents you might send, so this will certainly have its uses for those in the business world as well.

Cons of Gmail Confidential Mode

  • Confidential mode can’t prevent recipients from taking a screenshot of your email – and indeed, might not be able to prevent devices with malicious software from downloading the content of your email – it still offers a layer of protection when sending sensitive messages.

Google Maps' LIVE Popular Times Feature Saves Your Time

Google Maps' LIVE Popular Times Feature

There's a new feature in Google Maps that can spare you a huge amount of time on the off chance that you utilize it legitimately. It shows you how bustling a place like an eatery or store regularly is, and if there's generally a holdup time before you even go.

Scroll Down for Video

How to Use Google Maps' LIVE Popular Times Feature?

First, open Google Maps on your phone/PC and search for any location you want to visit, like a restaurant or a store, and then tap on it. Scroll down past the phone number, website, description and all that added information. Stop right here, where it says "Popular Times."

Google Maps Live location Feature - Forestrypedia

Now, check out the diagram. You can tap at different times to perceive how bustling a specific place is a certain time. On the off chance that you tap the name of the day, there's a drop-down menu that gives you a chance to change to perceive how popular a place is on various times of the week, as well. It will tell you, in real time, how busy a place currently is.

For restaurants, it typically says you can expect to wait 15 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour, or more if it's busy.

For places like the DMV or Doctor, it doesn't always give you an exact wait time, but it says things like "it's as busy as it gets," so you can plan your schedule accordingly.

NOKIA 2600

Nokia-2600- Tech Urdu

Released in 2004, the Nokia 2600 didn’t offer much — at least not by today’s standards. It was a simple device with the sturdy body Nokia devices were known for and small 1.5-inch display. It didn’t feature a camera, Bluetooth connectivity, or any other fancy features. But it did have great battery life and an affordable price tag that made it popular among many.

With 135+ MILLION UNITS SOLD, it is on number 9.

SAMSUNG E1100

Samsung-E1100-Tech Urdu

Like the Nokia 2600, the Samsung E1100 had a sturdy body and offered great battery life — 13 days on standby. It debuted in 2009 and became a success due to its affordable price and worldwide availability.

The device featured a 1.52-inch display, 1MB of internal storage (that’s not a typo), and a built-in flashlight for finding stuff in the dark.

With 150+ MILLION UNITS SOLD, it is on number 8.

NOKIA 5230

Nokia-5230 - Tech Urdu

The Nokia 5230 was an entry-level smartphone with a 3.2-inch touchscreen, the Symbian operating system, and 3G connectivity. It also had a GPS chip, a 2MP camera, and 128MB of RAM.

The device couldn’t connect to a Wi-Fi network, but that didn’t seem to bother people in 2009.

With 150+ MILLION UNITS SOLD, it is on number 7.

NOKIA 6600

Nokia-6600 - Tech Urdu

This phone’s quirky design made it special. Just look at it. It’s one of those things you either love or hate. Most people seemed to love it, considering it sold over 150 million units across the globe.

The Nokia 6600 was a high-end model when it came out in 2003, offering a 2.1-inch display, a basic camera, and an 850mAh battery. It was quite expensive, retailing for around 600 euros (~$695).

With 150+ MILLION UNITS SOLD, it is on number 6.

NOKIA 1200

Nokia-1200 - Tech Urdu

The biggest feature of the Nokia 1200 was its battery life — seven hour of talk time and 390 hours on standby. It also had a flashlight you could turn on by long-pressing the scroll up key.

Other than that, the phone wasn’t really all that exciting — it was just well built and well priced. That, plus the fact you could get it just about anywhere, made the Nokia 1200 one of the most popular phones in the world.

With over 150+ MILLION UNITS SOLD, it is on number 5.

NOKIA 3210

Nokia-3210-Tech Urdu

The Nokia 3210 is super old. It launched in 1999 when phones were only used for making calls and sending texts. The handset became a massive success due to its robust body, many color options, attractive look, and the Nokia logo up front, among other reasons.

Its best feature was the Snake game, which kept people glued to their screens for hours on end.

With over 150+ MILLION UNITS SOLD, it is on number 4.

iPhone 6 AND 6 PLUS

iPhone-6-and-6-Plus-Tech Urdu

Released in 2014, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are the newest phones on this list. They can’t compare with the latest iOS or Android devices in terms of specs, but they offer way more than the other 9 most sold handsets of all time.

One of the reasons for their success was their upgraded 4.7- and 5.5-inch displays, up from the iPhone 5s’ 4-inch screen. The iPhone 6 was three-times more popular than its bigger brother in the first few months of availability, likely due to its lower price tag.

With 220+ MILLION UNITS SOLD, these are on number 3.

NOKIA 1110

Nokia-1110-Tech Urdu

This compact phone only offered the basics. It didn’t have a camera, a color display, or a fancy design like the Nokia N70 and many other devices also released in 2005. Still, it outsold just about everyone, mainly due to its global availability and affordable price.

It was a great handset for those who only wanted to make calls, send texts, and play Snake every now and then.

With over 250+ MILLION UNITS SOLD, it is on number 2.

NOKIA 1100

Nokia-1100-Tech Urdu

The most sold model of all time is the Nokia 1100, a basic phone that debuted in 2003. It had a simple, curvy design that appealed to many, a small monochrome display, and a flashlight on top.
It stuck to the same formula that made all the other Nokia feature phones popular, offering a solid build quality, an attractive design, and an affordable price tag.

Nokia’s vast distribution network also brought the device to loads of markets across the globe, which played a big part in its success.

With over 250+ MILLION UNITS SOLD, it is on number 1.

So this was all about Top 10 Most Sold Phones of All Time. Let me know in comments below which phone(s) you used. Back then, Nokia was the king, so I used all of these Nokia phones back then, yet, 6600 was my best phone.
